阿富汗富家少爺阿米爾（Zekeria Ebrahim飾演）與僕人哈桑（Ahmad Khan Mahmidzada飾演）情同手足。在阿米爾受別人欺負的時候總是哈桑站出來保護他，盡管哈桑比他還要瘦弱。

哈桑也興奮的朝最後一個「戰利品」追去。但在途中哈桑卻被一夥不良少年堵截在小巷中蹂躪強暴，尾隨哈桑的阿米爾目睹了發生在哈桑身上的一切，卻沒有勇氣站出來保護哈桑而眼睜睜的看著哈桑被他們強暴。

阿米爾卻從此背上了沉重的心理包袱。再也無法面對哈桑的他為了永遠躲開那熟悉的目光，在一天借口陷害哈桑父子倆偷東西，把他們趕出了自家的大門。

隨著戰爭的爆發，阿米爾跟父親去了美國。在那裡他和父親一道辛勤的工作學習，從一無所有逐漸建立了他們的家業。然而，拉辛汗從阿富汗打來的一個電話卻打破了所有的平靜。

阿米爾意識到過去的從來都未曾過去。他始終無法擺脫對哈桑的歉疚。為了贖罪，為了哈桑，他再次踏上睽違二十多年的故 土。希望能為不幸的好友盡最後一點心力。然而此行卻讓他發現了一個驚天的謊言......
