劇情簡介：

迪勞麗絲（烏比·戈德堡飾）是月光夜總會出名的黑人女歌手。夜總會的老闆——黑社會頭目文斯·拉羅卡（哈威·凱特爾飾）與她關系曖昧。由於文森將妻子穿過的皮大衣送給她，迪勞麗絲生氣地要去把它還給文森，不料卻意外地撞見文森支使手下殺人。

她逃脫了殺手的追擊，向警官素德（比爾·努恩飾）講訴了事情經過。素德要求她到時出庭作證。在這之前，為了保證她的安全，將她藏到了聖·凱瑟琳修道院。

迪勞麗絲是活潑好動，喜歡拋頭露面的人，她簡直無法忍受修道院沉寂冷清的生活。她在晚上跑出去唱歌跳舞，院長（瑪吉·史密斯飾）只好把她安排到唱詩班裡，但她又對糟糕的唱詩班不滿意。

於是經過她改造的唱詩班在彌撒時竟高唱流行歌曲，僅是詞改成了贊美天主。不料這竟然受到了主教的贊賞。迪勞麗絲的膽子更大了，她把修女拉上大街搞衛生、畫壁畫、作宣傳，使得電視台的人前來拍攝采訪，但這無疑破壞了素德的計劃。這讓素德十分氣惱。

教皇決定來修道院訪問的消息使修女們雀躍不已，唱詩班加緊准備。但此時，素德卻告訴迪勞麗絲法庭決定提前審理文森一案，她很快就可以自由了，但她卻覺得這太快了。

就在教皇來到的前一天，警察中的內線向文森告了密，等素德找到迪勞麗絲她已經被文森的手下抓走了。修女們知道了這個消息十分憤怒，決定去營救迪勞麗絲。

而在月光夜總會里，文森的手下以為迪勞麗絲是真的修女，怕殺她會受到天主的懲罰，而遲遲不動手。修女們及時趕到，文森正准備親自動手時，素德趕到救了她們，文森被捕了。為教皇舉行的音樂會如期舉行，教皇十分高興滿意。迪勞麗絲與教皇合了影，她真的一舉成名
