1985年由萊昂納爾·里奇（Lionel Richie）譜寫，同時由其擔任主唱。
作為電影「飛越蘇聯」《White Nights》的主題曲。電影敘述一位原蘇聯芭蕾舞男演員和一位美國黑人踢踏舞演員在策劃出逃時結下的友誼。這首歌是在影片結束時唱的。相比電影本身的默默無聞，作為主題曲的《Say you say me》卻是享譽世界。
萊昂納爾·里奇1950年6月20日出生於美國阿拉巴馬的塔斯克吉(Tuskegee)。他中學時學習成績優異，叔叔送給他一把薩克斯管，祖父教他鋼琴，從而開始了他的音樂生涯，也許正是這種薩克斯風情和鋼琴的傳統規則奠定了里奇軟調音樂風格的基礎。上大學時，里奇便與一些同伴成立了校園演唱組，不僅在學校演唱，而且也走上社會巡迴演出，灌制唱片，還榮獲過幾張金唱片獎和白金唱片獎。後來里奇脫離樂隊，開始自己創作音樂和獨唱。
1985年的春天，萊昂納爾在應邀與邁克爾傑克遜（Michael Jackson）合作，共同譜寫了歐美流行藝人們連手為非洲難民們募款的「We Are the World」之後。
他又應邀為電影「飛越蘇聯」（White Nights）譜寫一首同名的主題曲。他花了兩個星期的時間，發現自己無法寫出那樣的一首歌，不過倒是譜成了另外一首他覺得可能很適合該片劇情的歌曲，那也就是「Say You, Say Me」。導演聽過之後，也非常喜歡，因此決定放在片子結尾。結果，這首歌不但勇奪冠軍，更囊括了奧斯卡與金球獎雙料的「最佳電影歌曲」。由於歌曲使用權的關系，「Say You, Say Me」當年並沒有收錄在「飛越蘇聯」的原聲帶專輯中，而出現於萊昂納爾1986年的第三張個人專輯「Dancing on the Ceiling」裡面。這張專輯，雖然再度獲得很高的評價，可惜銷售的成績卻很明顯的下滑，而他也就此進入蟄伏的情況。
只要人人都獻出一份愛，這世界就會更加美好，可以說這是首歌的主題思想。世界原本該這樣：大家說說笑笑，談論你我他，多多交流，而歌中所唱的現實是：人們戴著假面具生活，在黑暗中玩著游戲，互不吐真情，游戲生活，互不信任，猜疑之牆林立，在這樣的牆後終有人在大聲呼籲真誠。歌中還唱道：當我們走上人生的孤寂之路時似乎人世間最難的是找到朋友，一兩個通情達理、樂於為你指路的朋友。所以歌詞作者呼喚人間真情，這當然首先要求大家互訴衷腸，既信任別人又信任自己。
