《吻別》由何啟弘作詞，殷文琦作曲。殷文琦表示《吻別》是他1988年作的曲子，創作的初衷來自電影《末代皇帝》。
1988年，《末代皇帝》獲得第60屆奧斯卡最佳影片、最佳導演、最佳原始音樂等獎項，而獲得最佳音樂獎項的是為此片配樂的日本音樂家坂本龍一。殷文琦很崇拜坂本龍一，對其在電影故事情節中穿插配樂的表現形式很感興趣。於是，殷文琦就想用自己的方式創作有中國特色的電影配樂，然後按自己的音樂理念融入了大量中國傳統器樂作了一首分為四個章節的曲子，也就是《吻別》曲子的前身。1993年，正在寶麗金任職的殷文琦正好為張學友擔任製作，他就把這個當初為電影而作的配樂重新編寫，最終完成了《吻別》的曲子 。
