微電影即微型電影，又稱微影。它是指能夠通過互聯網新媒體平台傳播30-60分鍾之內的影片，適合在移動狀態和短時休閑狀態下觀看，具有完整故事情節的「微(超短)時」(10-30分鍾)放映、「微(超短)周期製作(1-7天或數周)」和「微(超小)規模投資(幾千-數千/萬元每部)」的視頻(「類」電影)短片，內容融合了幽默搞怪、時尚潮流、公益教育、商業定製等主題，可以單獨成篇，也可系列成劇。
2016年微電影行業慢慢轉向「微電影+」的新形態、新業態，即網路大電影，又稱新媒體電影 。時長超過60分鍾，通過互聯網平台進行發行，進行付費點播的影片，目前支持付費的視頻平台有：愛奇藝，PPS，搜狐，樂視，優酷，土豆，騰訊，PPTV，響巢看看，電影網，360影視，中國移動等。
