故事梗概：
故事發生在柏林的一家大飯店裡。那時整個德國籠罩著經濟危機的陰影。在豪華的大飯店裡麇集許多來自不同階層的人物。其中有陷入困境而避風頭的財界巨擘普萊辛格，無奈色衰而想自盡的芭蕾舞演員格魯辛斯卡婭，被賭博弄得傾家盪產而偷竊為生的舊男爵馮蓋根，普萊辛格的舊屬風燭殘年的孤老克林格蘭，以及年輕漂亮但貪婪自私的速記員弗蘭苓等。他們的地位與經歷各不相同，但受命運的驅使他們聚集一起，在短短的二十四小時內，發生了一系列驚心動魄的事件。主要情節是圍繞男爵與女伶的糾葛而展開的。馮蓋根見格魯辛斯卡婭金銀首飾不少，頓起邪心，假惺惺調情，乘機將財物窈取到手。孤寂的女伶竟然傾倒，一片痴情。哪知後來男爵潛入大老闆普萊辛格的房間，正要行竊時被後者殺死。格魯辛斯卡婭不知道這一切，還在自己的房同里等候著同情人的幽會……
