创作背景：

公木联想到自己所创作的诗《烈士赞》，认为该诗和电影有关系，都是在写英雄。在经历一晚后，第二天他完成了歌词创作。

该曲曲作者刘炽在拿到歌词后并没有马上谱曲，而是拉着朋友打起扑克。而正当大家打在兴头上时，刘炽突然把牌往桌上一扔，回家谢绝一切打扰，一遍遍读着歌词，最后创作出曲谱。该曲是以内蒙古民歌《巴特尔陶陶呼》为蓝本加以发展完成的。
