关于大背景，准确的说，就是20世纪的60年代。大背景就是“垮掉的一代”，因为这代人迷惘，嫌弃工作和学习。似乎一生都在靡靡中挣扎人生的意义（我个人觉得）。代表的人群就是所谓的“嬉皮士”，他们崇尚自由，极度的享乐，崇尚性解放，但是他们反对战争，要求关心环境。所以你可以听见珍妮上了playboy杂志，她又在酒吧裸体唱着鲍勃.迪伦（非常非常有影响力的民谣歌手，对摇滚有巨大贡献，也被视为60年代民权运动的代表人物）的Blowin' In The Wind，里面有歌词说“一个男人要走过多少路才能被称作男人，我的朋友，答案在风中”，也体现了一点精神的东西。然后珍妮毅然决然离去，后来在阿甘从越战回来，在演讲时再次遇到珍妮，我们可以知道珍妮应该是去了三藩市“找大部队”。珍妮把阿甘介绍给朋友时可以听见里面的背景音乐《san francisco》，歌词说“如果你去三藩市，手里一定要拿着花”，就标出嬉皮士的一个特点，他们常常在头上带花。从珍妮当时的打扮就可以看出但是嬉皮士的穿衣风格。珍妮后来带阿甘去他们的派对就能看出，这群嬉皮士群居的特点。三藩市，在美国加州，也因为那边大学林立，所以当“嬉皮”这种先锋精神盛行的时候，加州就走在了前沿。所以三藩市成为当时嬉皮士聚集的地方，他们在那里集体群居，写诗唱歌写小说，讨论哲学，抽大麻，裸体静坐之类。珍妮一再在电影中跳跃出现，从她的身上可以看出时代的变迁，不断提醒我们时代已经走到了哪一步。
片中提到的大事件，越南战争，阿甘的长官在战后经历的悲惨遭遇也是当时一个严重的社会问题，后来的乒乓外交，水门事件，（还有什么我已经忘了）都是在这样的背景下发生的。如果读这个时代感兴趣，可以找找同时代很多很多的歌曲都非常经典，也可以看看杰克凯鲁雅克的《在路上》，已经算是最具代表性的作品了。
