故事梗概：
故事发生在柏林的一家大饭店里。那时整个德国笼罩着经济危机的阴影。在豪华的大饭店里麇集许多来自不同阶层的人物。其中有陷入困境而避风头的财界巨擘普莱辛格，无奈色衰而想自尽的芭蕾舞演员格鲁辛斯卡娅，被赌博弄得倾家荡产而偷窃为生的旧男爵冯盖根，普莱辛格的旧属风烛残年的孤老克林格兰，以及年轻漂亮但贪婪自私的速记员弗兰苓等。他们的地位与经历各不相同，但受命运的驱使他们聚集一起，在短短的二十四小时内，发生了一系列惊心动魄的事件。主要情节是围绕男爵与女伶的纠葛而展开的。冯盖根见格鲁辛斯卡娅金银首饰不少，顿起邪心，假惺惺调情，乘机将财物窈取到手。孤寂的女伶竟然倾倒，一片痴情。哪知后来男爵潜入大老板普莱辛格的房间，正要行窃时被后者杀死。格鲁辛斯卡娅不知道这一切，还在自己的房同里等候著同情人的幽会……
